SUR is a new dance performance by choreographer Eva Recacha and composer Alberto Ruiz Soler that reflects on our long-standing collaboration, friendship, and shared experiences as Southern European migrants in the UK. This work explores the expertise of being a foreigner, the ability to adapt, find entry points into new spaces, and embrace transformation. It also questions the idea of belonging, recognizing that while we may not always fit the puzzle, the puzzle itself can shift to accommodate us.
Together, we take the stage, dancing, speaking, and sounding, placing ourselves in situations where we hold both knowledge and uncertainty. By confronting these tensions, we recontextualize a practice we have shaped over time. SUR is an exploration of identity, perception, and reinvention: who we are, who we perform, who we aspire to be, and who we resist being seen as. Through personal histories, stereotypes, and shared memories, we celebrate the fluidity of self and the ways in which we continually redefine our place in the world.
This performance is fully accessible to blind and partially sighted audiences. Collaborating with Maria Oshodi and Robin Payle York, we integrate audio description into the fabric of the work, ensuring that it is not solely a visual experience. Our approach to accessibility is one of openness creating space for foreignness to shape the work itself. We don’t ask you to fit in; we invite you to change us.
